# 3.T.T.3: Opinion Techniques Overview

Explain, analyze, and use opinion techniques to shape understandings.

## Expectations

- **3.T.T.3.a**: Describe and discuss the techniques used to present and design opinion texts, including author’s opinion statement, supporting reasons, and evidence. (I)
- **3.T.T.3.b**: This progression begins in 9th grade.
- **3.T.T.3.c**: Apply opinion techniques to create opinion pieces that introduce the topic, state an opinion about the topic, supply reasons to support the opinion with linking words (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect the opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. (C)
- **3.T.T.3.d**: This progression begins in 9th grade.

- **Beginning**: Identify an author’s opinion statement. Apply an opinion technique to introduce a topic. Apply an opinion technique to conclude the text. Use linking word(s) to connect the opinion and reason(s).
- **Developing**: Identify explicit reason(s) and/or evidence to support a provided author’s opinion statement. Apply opinion technique(s) to support a provided opinion with reason(s).
- **Proficient**: Describe the technique(s) used to present and design opinion texts, including author’s opinion statement, supporting reasons, and/or evidence. Determine the author’s opinion and support it with reason(s) or evidence. Apply opinion techniques to create opinion pieces that introduce a provided topic, state the opinion, and supply reasons to support the opinion with linking words (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect the opinion and reasons, and/or provide a concluding statement or section.
- **Distinguished**: Identify and describe the techniques used to present the author’s opinion and support it with evidence.
