6.GSR.5Area, Surface Area & Volume
Solve relevant problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Appears in: Mathematics, Grade 6
Expectations
6.GSR.5.1Explore area as a measurable attribute of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons conceptually by composing or decomposing into rectangles, triangles, and other shapes. Find the area of these geometric figures to solve problems.
6.GSR.5.2Given the net of three-dimensional figures with rectangular and triangular faces, determine the surface area of these figures.
6.GSR.5.3Calculate the volume of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths by applying the formula, V = (area of base) x (height).

What mastery looks like
Georgia's Achievement Level Descriptors. The levels are cumulative: each includes the ones before it. Proficient is on grade level.
- Beginning
- Given a visual model, find the area of a triangle.
- Developing
- Given a visual model, find the area of a polygon by composing or decomposing it into rectangles and/or triangles. Given the net of a rectangular prism, determine the surface area of the figure. Given a visual model, calculate the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths.
- Proficient
- Solve authentic problems involving the areas of polygons composed of rectangles and triangles. Given the net of a three-dimensional figure with rectangular and/or triangular faces, determine the surface area of the figure. Solve authentic problems involving the volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths.
- Distinguished
- Solve authentic complex or multi-step problems involving the areas of triangles and rectangles and the surface areas and volumes of three-dimensional figures with triangular or rectangular faces.
